Alex Pagán

Alcantarilla, 1990

Alex Pagán has been part of ASSIDO’s Day Occupational Centre since 1991, where he has developed an artistic practice rooted in a deeply personal and intuitive perspective. His creative work is inspired by the experiences, memories, emotions and significant moments that shape his life and identity. Through his art, Alex has built a visual language of his own—one that allows him to express what matters to him, what moves him and what accompanies him in his everyday life.

His artistic universe is closely connected to the people and events that are meaningful to him: birthdays, celebrations, loved ones and personal memories. Each composition becomes a kind of visual diary, where symbols and figures come together to tell stories rich in emotion and significance. Rather than simply depicting images, Alex creates narratives inspired by his own experiences and feelings.

Visually, his work is striking for its richness of detail and its tendency towards horror vacui—the deliberate filling of space with symbols, figures and visual elements that interact with one another. In some ways, this expressive approach recalls the visual intensity of Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose work is also characterised by densely layered compositions and an energetic use of space. Alex, however, transforms these influences into something entirely his own, developing a distinctive and highly recognisable visual language.

His artworks are built through narrative compositions in which every figure, word and symbol contributes to a broader story. They invite viewers to slow down, explore the details and discover new meanings with each encounter.

Beyond his artistic practice, Alex is known for his calm and warm personality. He approaches others with kindness and generosity, while also demonstrating remarkable dedication, perseverance and a strong work ethic. He has a particular fascination with magic and with anything that sparks curiosity and wonder—interests that can also be felt in the vitality and playful energy of his creations.

One of the defining qualities of Alex’s creative process is his high level of independence. He works with confidence and freedom, making his own artistic decisions and maintaining a direct, personal connection with every piece he creates.

Over the years, Alex’s work has attracted the attention of a wide audience and has been featured in a variety of exhibitions. He has also completed large-scale commissioned projects, demonstrating the ability of his work to move beyond the studio and engage with diverse audiences. His artistic journey continues to grow, driven by an authentic creative voice and a unique visual identity.
